Strong Raises 4 by Paul Bowyer

This series is the fourth one about raising responder's suit.

This quiz and the previous one are all seen from the perspective of responder.

What do you do after partner has raised your suit?

Question 1

 Q 3
 A J 4 2
 Q 10 6

Q: 1 - As South you respond 1 to partner's opening 1 bid.

What do you bid after your suit is raised?

 Your choice:
A: 4. Sure, your trumps are tatty but the point-count suggests you have enough for game.

Together your partnership has around 25-27 points (you have 10, partner has indicated roughly 15-17) and an eight-card Spade fit; that ought to be sufficient to have a decent chance in 4.

Eight-card major suit fits are important at this game, and the jump raise to 3 guarantees four-card support.

 Your choice:
A: 4. Partner is inviting you to bid game – do you have extras (having promised at least 6 points with your 1 response)?

Sure you do – a six-card trump suit and a promising 6∙4∙2∙1 pattern.

Man does not live by points alone – distribution values are just as important.

A ten-card trump fit, a four-card side-suit and a singleton is worth much more than the nominal point-count.

 Your choice:
A: 4. Once again (cf Q1) you have a decent hand but poor trumps.

Still, with a known fit of at least eight cards and a combined minimum of 25 points it would be spineless to back out now and play this one in a part-score.

You must bid game and hope that dummy is useful. Partner did open the bidding, remember!

Question 4

 Your choice:
A: Pass. Partner is inviting you to bid 4 but you have nothing to spare for your two-level response.

You have promised a minimum of 10 points and a five-card Heart suit – and that is precisely what you have. Where are your extra values that would justify a further move?

There are too many losers to expect to make 4 with this stubby 5·3·3·2 hand – Pass and hope to scramble nine tricks.

Question 5

Q: 5 - As South you respond 2 to partner's opening 1 opening bid.

What do you bid after your suit is raised?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1P
2P3P
?

 Your choice:
A: 4. Yes, the same 10 points as in Q4, but here your hand is markedly better.

You have an extra trump and an attractive 6·4·2·1 pattern, a hand with far fewer losers than a ghastly 5·3·3·2 shape.

Partner is asking if you have extra values to advance to game and the distributional features of your hand allow you to do so.

4 may not be a cast-iron certainty facing a minimum opening bid, but it should have a decent play and you have to give it a go.
